The Giant Killers
WEST BROMWICH ALBION
The Baggies are one of the few current clubs who can trace their trophy success back to the days before the Football League, recording their first Cup final victory in 1888. Since then though the cup returned to Stoney Lane and later The Hawthorns just three more times in 1892, 1954 and most recently when Jeff Astle's shot finally broke the deadlock in extra time against Everton in 1968. Albion have spent most of their league existence moving between the top two divisions with their greatest ever team being the immediate post first war side, which brought the title to the Hawthorns for the only time in 1920.The club's blackest days were in the early 90s when two seasons were spent in the third tier of English football, since when the Baggies have made it back to the elite tier. As fate often dictates it was Albion's title winners who suffered their biggest pre war cup exit when losing to Barnsley in 1920 but that was topped by their exit at the hands of Woking in 1992 while their defeat by Leyton Orient in 1985 still makes Baggies fans wince to this day.
