The Giant Killers
TORQUAY UNITED
Torquay Town were formed in 1899 as one of several local sides in the town at the time but a series of mergers finally saw this reduced to a single entity in 1921 named Torquay United with a view to trying to gain entry to the Football league. Their first appearance in the first round of the cup came in 1925 and League membership as part of the third division south followed in 1927. The Gulls spent the next eighty years in the league, never finishing higher then sixth in third tier and regularly having to seek re-election or fend off relegation. Their luck finally ran out in 2007 when they dropped down to the fifth level and out of the League but it was while in the fifth tier that they enjoyed their greatest cup moment when beating second tier Blackpool in 2009.
