The Giant Killers
SOUTHAMPTON
Southampton's love affair with the F A cup goes back to their days as a Southern league club when they were one of just three non league teams to reach the final itself. The Saints achieved this in both 1900 and 1902 but lost on both occasions yet despite this success, and a string of victories over top flight sides along the way, the league shunned them until the formation of the third division in 1920. The Saints spent the next forty years in the lower divisions before winning promotion to the top flight for the first time in 1966. The majority of the next forty years were spent as an elite club, although it was during a brief spell in the second tier that Southampton enjoyed their finest hour when Bobby Stokes found himself onside, even if the television pictures suggested otherwise, to fire the only goal of the 1976 F A cup final against Manchester United. Southampton lost their most recent final in 2002 and worse still lost their top flight status in 2005.
