The Giant Killers
Newport County were formed in 1912, starting out in the Southern League before being elected as original members of the Third Division in 1920. The club remained a lower division outfit for most of the next seventy years, briefly losing their place for a season in the early thirties and briefly enjoying life as a Second Division club for a single season after the League resumed at the end of World war II. During that time the club managed to beat two top flight sides, the most notable being Sheffield Wednesday in the early sixties. Newport's world fell apart in 1988, losing their League place and then going bust before being instantly reformed in 1989 to start a long twenty-three year battle to win back their League place in 2013.
