The Giant Killers

Every F A cup slaying since 1888

For the first time in history all sixteen elite clubs were despatched from the competition by their peers and not by any side from the lower divisions though naturally there was the same amount of opportunity.

Ten of the sixteen top flight clubs were paired together in round one allowing six chances for a cup upset but of these only Burton Wanderers of Division Two survived into the second round draw when holding Sheffield United to a 1-1 draw before being narrowly beaten in the replay.

With eleven of the last sixteen from the top flight in the hat it was much harder to find a potential shock even though all five lower level clubs were kept apart. Two of them, Grimsby and Newton Heath survived second round day having both been held at home 1-1 by West Bromwich Albion and Derby County respectively but both elite clubs won the replays with ease to set up an all top flight quarter final line up.
