This clash between two sides both experiencing uneventful mid table seasons in their respective divisions saw second tier Newcastle take the scalp of an elite club for the second consecutive year. The sides were all square at one apiece at the interval before Tom Rendell, who had never previously scored for his club and never did again, bagged the second half winner. Aston Villa brought the Magpies down to earth with a crashing thud two weeks later in a 7-1 second round mauling on their way to ultimately lifting the cup.
